STEP 5:

Contrast is the key to a great sketch and when I need more I will flip the vellum over and add a dark color or black to the horizon to make it pop. Again this is an area where you will make your own style and feel free to try different things.

STEP 6:

When I flip the page back to the top you will see that the black really made the color pop off of the page. I am now ready to do some more work on other areas.

I flip the page back over and add all my dark areas. Tires, windows, junk under the car, etc.

Remember that when you flip your sheet over these areas will be 50% black so don’t be afraid. Layers are the key to great rendering.

When I flip the page over this is what you get. The blacks are all a nice 50% value and my orange is POPPING off of the page. I’m feeling good about the rendering and it’s all so simple once you figure it out.

Harv's Tip of the day: Layers are the key so practice and never race to make black 100% value. Build it up slowly and look for a nice artsy look and feel that creates drama.
